A Canadian Photographer

We have such awesome memories of this wedding day! My associate (thank you Liz!) Liz Lott of Snapdragon Photography recently said “I seriously think I developed new smile lines that day!” It’s not often that I get to shoot near Parry Sound, but I’m thrilled when I do – and a wedding day at the The Ridge at Manitou is a pretty spectacular event. I have some dedicated favourites in cottage country, The Ridge at Manitou is one. I really can’t say enough about this venue and the staff! Amanda and Scott were equally delightful to shoot. This was a day filled with humour, from all over the world, in fact – fancy fascinators included. When Amanda explained to her family that the Canadian wedding was going to have a laid back cottage feel they were a little confused. If you’ve ever been to the Lakes District in England you’ll know that “laid back cottage” – the way it’s done here in Ontario is very different from the posh vacation culture in the UK. It wasn’t really as if these two had a choice, however. Getting married at The Ridge at Manitou was obvious. Years earlier Amanda and Scott actually met here. Scott was a golf pro and Amanda worked at the Inn, when it was in operation. After years of living and travelling together they finally settled back in Canada. Cheer to you both! Ok, so maybe winter is almost over. Maybe as of today it’s pretty much over. Who cares ’cause winter in Ontario is awesome, puppies are fun, and this couple’s snowy engagement session was a treat to shoot in my back yard. I’m so looking forward to their weekend long wedding in Sudbury at the end of October. Hopefully…maybe…there will be a little less snow…?

Cheers to you, dear Michelle and Frank. You were true troopers. Your dogs were a riot and both J and I enjoyed our afternoon together.

This was a pure delight. This entire experience from beginning to end.

She called me Sunday afternoon. In fact I was just packing up from a winter engagement session. She asked about wedding photography. I asked about the date. She said “Thursday, this Thursday. In the forest, it’s a bit of hike. We’re eloping.” YES! YES! YES! Pick me! Pick me! And it started, the brainstorming, the calls, the witness, the officiant. Everyone had to be ready in just days and it was long weekend. This bride had 3 days to plan her wedding. Most brides I know have at least 365 to gear up! After countless messages, texts, and people finding I met with them early Thursday morning at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville. We drank coffee and talked about why eloping was important to them (since they’d already been engaged for a year). We talked about how they felt about each other, their families, and their future. Then we talked about photography and art. He is an incredibly talented artist – his medium is glass.

And finally it was time to get married.

We met at the entrance to Hardy Lake Provincial Park in Gravenhurst. A few layers later, some sweet hellos – an “are you ready?”, and snowshoes for the newly weds, it was time. The five of us, the newlyweds, the officiant, the photographer, and the witness (also a photographer), hiked through the woods and across the lake to the most beautiful wind-blown pine  I’ve ever seen. This was the ceremony site, it was where they kissed for the first time as a married couple, where they exchanged their vows, their written promises to each other, and where they enjoyed their first dance (he sang to her). Every second of this chilly adventure was sweet, meaningful, silly, romantic and at times quite hilarious.

Here are a few of the sneakiest frames. These two are back at home and sharing their news slowly.
